Righetti took advantage of a rough start by the Santa Barbara High girls basketball team and beat the host Dons in their season opener, 51-28, on Thursday night at J.R. Richards Gym.
Santa Barbara committed 11 turnovers in the first quarter and fell behind 12-4. Righetti (1-1) expanded its lead to 27-12 by halftime.
Santa Barbara cut down on the turnovers for the rest of the game but couldn’t make up the deficit.
Dayzia Mendoza scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Dons.
“We were able to pull down 42 rebounds, and our defense wasn’t too bad for our first game,” said coach Andrew Butcher. “We will continue to work on our ball security and shot selection.
“It’s a great group of girls putting out maximum effort.”
