A short-handed Santa Barbara High girls water polo team went 1-1 on the first of action at the Bill Barnett Newport Holiday Cup tournament.

The Dons, who were missing three starters, dominated against Riverside Poly, 12-1, and fell to Southern Section Division 1 power and undefeated Newport Harbor, 9-2. 

Elise Power and Oli Obando each scored two goals against Riverside Poly. Makenna Wright dished out four assists to go with one goal and Bella Obando was a force on defense, making eight steals to go with one goal; Rachel Whitney had three steals, a goal and earned three ejections and Maria Bittle added a goal.

Against Newport Harbor, the score was tied 2-2 at halftime before the Sailors used their speed to take over the game. 

Juju Martinez do Amaral had four steals and goal and Bittle scored a goal for the Dons. 

Santa Barbara goalie Faith Tedesco made 16 saves and had five assists on the day.

The Dons play Mater Dei on Saturday at 10:40 a.m. at Corona del Mar High.
