Santa Barbara High capped a 10-0 Channel League girls tennis season with a 16-2 win over Santa Ynez on Thursday.

The Dons starters in singles and doubles swept their sets.

Sophomore Kk Casey, playing No. 3 singles for the Dons, won a tough match against Kaitlyn Thompson, the No. 2 player from Santa Ynez. Casey was trailing 4-5 when “she made the brave and intelligent decision to dictate points more of her dominant forehand side,” said Santa Barbara coach Danny Echt. “It was great to see Kk trust herself late in the set, especially after being down.”

She rallied for a 7-5 victory.

“We have improved significantly over the Channel League season,” Echt said. “I have to recognize how fabulously focused this team has competed throughout tight situations. It was through a lot of grit and joy that the Dons played which made the championship accomplishment rewarding.

“They certainly proved to themselves that they were physically and mentally up for the challenges, and that is a great measure of success.”

The Dons finish the regular season 15-6.
