Justine Katz of the Dos Pueblos girls basketball team and Andreas Dybdahl of the state-qualifying Santa Barbara High boys cross country squad were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Dybdahl was Santa Barbara’s top finisher and helped the Dons to a top-10 finish in the program’s debut at CIF State Cross Country Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Competing in the Division 2 race, Dybdahl placed 25th in a time of 15:45.9 on the 5,000-meter course. Santa Barbara finished in eighth place.
“He’s been phenomenal all year,” said coach Olivia Perdices of Dybdahl.
Katz opened the basketball season at Dos Pueblos with a near triple-double. The junior scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had seven steals. She added five assists and a blocked shot to her stat line in a 62-26 win over Newbury Park.
The other female athletes who were candidates for this week’s award were Alexis Tucker (UCSB basketball) and Amarisse Camargo (Carpinteria girls basketball).
The male honorable mention choices include Brandon Smith (SBCC football), Ajay Mitchell (UCSB basketball) and Kainoa Glasgow (Carpinteria basketball).
Last week’s award winners, Babacar Pouye of Cate basketball and Jaymi Coronado of Bishop Diego girls basketball, also were recognized at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon.
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes.
The award is sponsored by the law firm Maho-Prentice.
