A homeless man was arrested early Thursday on suspicion of chasing and charging another man with a knife near Santa Barbara’s harbor boat launch.

The bizarre incident unfolded about 9:40 a.m.

Several people called 911 to report that a man was chasing another man with a knife, according to Anthony Wagner, a public information officer for the Santa Barbara Police Department.

According to witness statements, the suspect allegedly attempted to steal a case of beer from the truck bed of the victim’s vehicle, Wagner said.

When the victim confronted the man about the theft, the suspect allegedly pulled out a knife and “advanced” toward the victim, according to Wagner.

The suspect then reportedly set down the stolen beer, Wagner said, and chased the victim through the parking lot, near Sea Landing, with a knife in his hand.

When officers arrived shortly after the incident began, the suspect allegedly threw the knife and fled toward Cabrillo Boulevard. Officers caught the suspect but have not found the knife, according to Wagner.

Fernando Palomar, 29, was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and resisting arrest. Bail was set at $1 million.
