Santa Barbara High won five sets in the first round to set the tone in a 12-6 win over Simi Valley in a CIF-SS Division 2 first-round girls tennis playof match on Wednesday.

“We have been trying to get better starts in our matches, so this was kind of a shock in a positive way,” said coach Danny Echt.

Sophia Ostovany came out hot and her first opponent 6-0.

“Sophia kept her opponents off guard all day today by moving the ball around really well,” Echt said. “It was nice to see Sophia capture a lead and never look back in all her matches today. She has been diligent about improving her serve in practice, and that work is paying off for her as she swept all her singles matches today 3-0.”

Senior captain Hannah Mendez and junior Natalie Brewer played very solid doubles and swept their three sets.

“I was happy with the way the Dons players adapted and patiently worked through points rather than trying to hit lower percentage bigger shots on rally balls,” Echt said. “It shows how the Dons are maturing because playing against this style of play can be very frustrating.”

Santa Barbara (16-6) plays its second round match on Friday at Long Beach Poly.
