Santa Barbara High’s freshman doubles team of Charlotte Ryan and Koko Kelly rallied from a 5-3 deficit and beat the San Marcos No. 1 team of Samantha Forster and Bella Muñoz, 7-5, to spark the Dons to a 10-8 win over the Royals, clinching a tie for the Channel League tennis title on Thursday.
The win improves the Dons to 8-0 in league.
Ryan and Kelly went 3-0 on the day.
“Koko and Charlotte have been incredibly steady as a doubles team this season, they have continually played with a focused intention and fight hard for each other and for the team,” Santa Barbara coach Danny Echt. “Their serves have greatly improved which allows them to dictate points frequently. As a dubs team, their chemistry is super tight which is a huge intangible in their successes.”
In singles, No. 1 Sophia Ostovany went 2-1 on the day.
“After battling well and losing the first round match against Natasha Gill 4-6, Sophia picked up her game and had a solid win against a very steady Fiona Kinsella, 6-2. Sophia is beginning to find her rhythm by committing to her shots, swinging through balls, and her level of play is certainly elevating.
“Sophia had the pleasure of being the last match on where the Dons lead was 9-8. It was just as Sophia would want it. She played a patient, and creative last set against a very good athlete, Charlotte Manion, who was playing well and running down a lot of shots.”
Ostovany finished strong by holding serve and won the set 6-3.
