A Santa Barbara woman was arrested Tuesday night after she allegedly threatened someone with a loaded firearm, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Castillo Street on a report of a woman with a gun, said Anthony Wagner, a police spokesman.

“Witnesses advised that a female suspect was walking in the street with a firearm,” Wagner said. “Additionally, witnesses reported that the female was at the door of a residence banging on the door with the weapon itself.”

Officers converged on the area and located Mona Chacha Cordero, 45, who was holding a purse, Wagner said.

Cordero was ordered at gunpoint to drop the purse, and was taken into custody without incident.

Police found a loaded Ruger P-90 semi-automatic handgun in the purse, Wagner said, adding that there was a round in the chamber and two others in the magazine.

An additional loaded magazine also was located in the purse, for a total of 20 rounds, he added.

“The investigation revealed that Cordero pointed the loaded handgun at a victim, who ran to avoid being shot,” Wagner said.

Cordero was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a concealed firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, and committing a felony while out of jail on her own recognizance, Wagner said.

She remained in custody on Wednesday afternoon in lieu of $500,000 bail.
