A suffocating defense set the tone for the Santa Barbara High boys basketball team in a 58-23 win at Santa Ynez in a Channel League opener on Tuesday.

“Our defense really stepped up in the second quarter and carried over to the second half,” said Santa Barbara coach Corey Adam.

The Dons (10-6, 1-0) went on a 15-4 run to break a 14-14 tie in the second quarter and never looked back.

“Our guards did a tremendous job of maintaining ball pressure,” said Adam.

Bryce Warrecker led Santa Barbara with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Stephen Davis had 10 points, Moki Nacario scored nine, Dylan Borgeson chipped in eight and Jackson Gonzales added six points and had five steals.

The Dons play San Marcos on Friday at SBCC.
