A Santa Maria man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

At about 9:45 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of North Western Avenue on a report of vandalism in progress at a residence, said Sgt. Paul Flores.

“As officers arrived in the area, they found an adult male suffering from a head injury on the 900 block of West Main Street,” Flores said. “Patrol officers rendered first aid until the ambulance arrived, (and) quickly determined that the injured male was related to the call on Western.”

Investigators determined that the victim had been struck with a shovel, and identified the suspect as Juan Carlos Arizaga-Rosas, 37, Flores said.

Officers returned to the address on North Western Sunday afternoon, and found Arizona-Rosas in the front yard.

He was taken into custody without incident.

The victim was taken to the hospital by AMR ambulance with what were described as serious but not life-threatening injuries, Flores said.
