The 9-1 SBCC football team was awarded a bowl game on its field by the California Community College Athletic Association on Monday.
Coach Craig Moropoulos announced that La Playa Stadium will be the venue for the Southern California Football Association Beach Bowl. The Vaqueros’ opponent and the game date are still to be determined. The game will be played either Nov. 26 or Dec. 3.
SBCC won nine straight games and captured the American League title after dropping its season opener against Hancock, which ended up winning the SCFA National Northern League title.
“I’m extremely proud to say that I’ve been here 17 years and this is the most fun I’ve had,” said Moropoulos at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon. “This is the best team I’ve coached and (the players) are just high-character guys.”
He introduced cornerback Lamar Campbell and long-snapper/running Cameron Woolsey. Campebell returned an interception for a touchdown and Woolsey, who is primarily the team’s long-snapper, got to play at running back and scored three touchdowns in the Vaqueros’ 65-27 win at Santa Monica. It was their third game in which they scored more than 60 points.
SBCC averaged 45.5 points per game this season.
