Local triathletes tested themselves in a Junior Lifeguards fitness activity called the Stud Ironman during Sunday’s action in the Semana Nautica Summer Sports Festival at East Beach.
Jason Smith, last year’s Santa Barbara Triathlon champion, took top honors in an event that has competitors run to three East Lifeguard towers and do a buoy swim at each one before running back to the start/finish line. Smith finished in 37 minutes, 10 seconds.
Kyle Visin (37.55), Ben Tucker (38.30), Edward Sweeney (39.52) and Tyler Willson (41:25) completed the top five.
The women’s winner was open-water swimmer Caitlin Swalec in 44:10. The next four finishers were Chrissy Faulding (46:55), Annick Lamb (48:35), Leslie Roth (50:40) and Sienna Cherry (53:00).
Leslie Roth was joined by her entire family. Husband Chuckie, the aquatics coach at San Marcos High and SBCC, finished sixth overall in 41:45 and sons Kumani (43:15), Indie (48:56) and Utah (55:45) followed.
THREE-MILE SWIM
Myles Peck, a Big West-champion swimmer back in 2006 at UCSB, won the 3-mile ocean swim in under an hour, finishing in 58 minutes, 28 seconds.
Frank Bird came in second place in 1:00.47 and 17-year-old Amelie Ogilby of Colorado took third and was the top woman finisher for the second straight event. She won the 2-mile swim on Saturday.
Patrick O’Brien (1:02.25) and John Bish (1:02.57) rounded out the top five finishers. The second women’s finisher was San Marcos High aquatics athlete Alina King (11th overall in 1:09.57) and Kim Leigh (1:10.38) took third (13th overall).
500-METER SWIM
Dos Pueblos High aquatics athlete Bethany King took first place in 6:37. Javier Saldena broke seven minutes, finishing in 6:49 to take second and Matt Struckmeyer was third in 7:08.
