The Santa Maria Joint Union High School District has approved start dates for student-athletes to return to physical activity and training under strict health and safety guidelines.

Athletic directors at Santa Maria, Righetti and Pioneer Valley high schools will begin holding coaches meetings to review new rules before they begin conditioning workouts with their teams July 6-17.

The rules adhere to the guidelines set up by the state, Santa Barbara County Public Health, the California Department of Education, the National Federation of High Schools and the California Interscholastic Federation, according to the district.

The plan for return to physical activity was developed by a committee made up of school adminstrators and athletic directors.

“This is a very detailed and methodical process to safely start conditioning and training with the hope of bringing students back to a physical activity mode and the eventual return to organized athletic contests,’’ said John Davis,  the assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for the SMJUHSD. “We are taking prudent and safe steps.’’

The committee began working on the details in mid-June. The plan was brought to the superintendent cabinet for approval Tuesday.
