No. 1 singles player Sophia Ostovany and the sophomore doubles team of Charlotte Ryan and Koko Kelly paced Santa Barbara High’s girls tennis team to a 13-5 win over Dos Pueblos on Wednesday.

“The points were often long and staying patient while remaining aggressive was a key today for the Dons,” said Santa Barbara coach Danny Echt. “Sophia played within herself and was striking the ball off the ground comfortably on both sides.  She attacked well when the opporutnity presented ittself, so she kept the pressure on her opponents.  Serve rhythm is also looking very positive for Sophia.”

Echt praised the play of his No. 1 doubles team.

“Charlotte is getting much more dangerous in doubles because she is committing herself to not only playing the net but being smartly aggressive,” he said. “She and Koko have a great way of communicating and it’s fun to watch them defend as well as they attack.”

DP’s doubles team of Cami Chou and Chloe Harrah took two sets. Kate Scherz won a tight set at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (4) and freshman Sophia Fenkner captured her first varsity set, 6-3.

“Today our girls were challenged by a deep Santa Barbara team,” said coach Laura Housinger. “We had some close sets but did not close out the points to our advantage in the end.

“We look forward to working on some skills before we play Santa Barbara again and hope to improve our results in the future.”
