After allowing 15 points in the first quarter, Santa Barbara High’s boys basketball team held Santa Ynez to 14 over the next three periods and rolled to a 47-29 victory in a Channel League game at J.R. Richards Gym.
“Our team defense was great after the first quarter,” said Santa Barbara coach Corey Adam, whose team is 3-2 in league play,
The Dons trailed 15-10 after the first quarter and were down 20-19.
“Offensively we weren’t playing team basketball in the first half,” said Adam.
The Dons picked things up in the third quarter, outscoring the Pirates 23-6 to take control of the game.
“Credit to our boys as they responded in the second half by being patient on offense, moving to get each other open and passing up okay shots to find teammates for good shots,” said Adam. “Blaise Winston, Grant Gonzales and Luke Gonzales did a phenomenal job on Santa Ynez’s best player (Landon Lassahn), holding him to seven points., all coming in the 1ast five minutes of the game.”
Caleb Cassidy also scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Pirates (1-5 in league).
Luke Zuffelato led the way the Dons with 11 points, and Devan Stone and Mikey Denver each chipped in nine.
“Devan has been looking better in each game and is starting to find a rhythm as works his way back from injury,” said Adam.
