Sophomore Natasha Gill swept her three sets at No. 1 singles and freshman Cristina Wickline rallied to win two sets at No. 2, but the San Marcos girls tennis team was edged by Santa Ynez in total games after the teams tied 9-9 in sets on Friday. The Pirates prevailed 83-78.
Santa Ynez won five doubles sets and took one singles set by a 6-0 score.
“Our doubles had good energy out there, but we couldn’t quite pull it through today,” said coach Jonny Sapp. “We just need to be steadier and cut down the unforced errors.”
San Marcos Boys Beat Santa Ynez
Freshmen Jed Greenwald and Matthew Chung swept their sets to pace the Royals to their second straight win, 16-2.
Greenwald swept all his sets at love.
“Jed has a mature game and crafts points with precision,” said coach Jarrod Bradley. “He hits his spots and forces his opponent to make errors.”
Josh Kazali earned two wins for Santa Ynez.
The team of Jayden Duncan and Giulio Rambelli paced the doubles squads to a sweep. The Royals lost only two games all match.
“Our doubles teams have been very competitive in practice. Over the last three weeks each of them has asserted themselves and made a case for them to be our top team,” said Bradley. “Jayden and Giulio played nearly perfect tennis today, serving and returning aggressively and winning many quick points.”
San Marcos (2-0) is at Lompoc on Wednesday and hosts Santa Barbara on Friday.

Santa Barbaa Girls Win 17-1
Santa Barbara used 18 players in a 17-1 win over Lompoc.
Senior captain Natalie Brewer teamed up with sophomore Charlotte Ryan.
“Brewer’s crafty volleys and much improved footwork are making her doubles efforts look effortless,” coach Danny Echt said. “Charlotte is very comfortable in the backcourt and can set up Natalie well at the net with her depth and strength off the ground. It is great to see Charlotte make her way into the net and pressure her opponents.”
Several new players to the Dons team earned their way into the lineup and gained experience. Echt cited Shalini Lewis, Ruby Story, Lucia DiPadova and Dilyn Clyne.
Santa Barbara is at Dos Pueblos on Wednesday and at San Marcos on Friday.
