A plane involved in a fatal crash near the Van Nuys Airport on Friday afternoon reportedly was en route to northern Santa Barbara County.

Los Angeles Fire Department personnel were dispatched to an incident involving a downed airplane on the 6900 block of Havenhurst Avenue.

Two people were found dead at the scene, LAFD spokesman Nicholas Prange said.

After the crash, the aircraft caught fire, which crews quickly extinguished.

The incident did not damage any structures in the area, Prange added.

The incident involved a single-engine Navion B aircraft that had departed from the Van Nuys Airport and was headed to the Santa Ynez Airport, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be in charge of the investigation, and will determine the probable cause of the accident, Gregor added.
