Tyler Tom sparked a 10-0 run off the bench in the first quarter to ignite Cate to a 52-30 boys basketball win over Malibu in a pool-play game at the 77th annual Nordhoff Tournament on Thursday.
Tom had back-to-back steals and assists and a big rebound and oulet pass, enabling the Rams to take control of the game.
“We were able to make Malibu play faster than they would have liked,” said Cate coach Andy Gil.
The Rams led 14-2 after the first quarter and 27-10 at halftime.
Ethan Ng scored 14 points to pace the Cate offense, while Thomas Nettesheim did a good job as the Rams’ floor leader.
Cate (3-1) plays its final pool-play game against Buena on Friday at 6 p.m.
