The UCSB women’s soccer season came to an end Saturday with an 2-1 double-overtime loss to Long Beach State in the opening round of the Big West Tournament in Long Beach Saturday.
Lauren Helwig, the Gauchos’ leading scorer, provided UCSB’s only goal in the 82nd minute, taking a cross from Liu O’Callaghan and heading it past The Beach’s goalkeeper Zora Standifer.
That was the equalizer after The Beach’s Lena Silano opened the scoring two minutes into the second half.
Silano struck again less than two minutes into overtime, again on an assist from Alia Sinoff.
That 2-1 Long Beach State lead lasted the rest of the mandatory 20-minutes of overtime — two 10-minute periods.
UCSB, coming in seeded 5th in the tournament, finishes 5-9-6 overall and 4-3-3 in the Big West. Long Beach State — which the Gauchos beat 2-1 just a week earlier to end the regular season — is seeded 4th and continues with a 5-2-3 Big West record.
Helwig, a sophomore midfielder from El Dorado Hills, finishes with seven goals and 15 points on the season, both team highs.
Helwig was named to the All-Big West First Team this season, while Liu was an All-Big West Honorable Mention.
In 63 minutes of play, sophomore goalie sub Taylor Little notched three saves on four shots-on-goal.
UCSB put up seven shots on goal in the game, compared to Long Beach State’s five. The Gauchos also had more corner kicks with six and fewer fouls with seven.
