The UCSB women kept pace in the Big West with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-22 sweep of UC San Diego Sunday in the Thunderdome.
The Gauchos are now 10-2 in Big West play, and remain a game behind leader Hawai’i at 11-1. Long Beach State and Cal Poly are tied for third at 9-3. UCSB is 14-8 overall.
Michelle Ohwobete led the offense with 11 kills, on a .290 hitting percentage, and also led the team in aces with two. Brianna McKnight had nine kills and an efficient .389 percentage. MaCall Peed had a team-high 16 digs. Deni Wilson was a defensive force in the front row, with nine blocks, four of them solo.
The Gauchos came out slow in the first set, spotting the Tritons a 6-0 lead before getting into high gear. Sophie Messinger’s six-point service run allowed closed out the game at 25-16.
UCSB came out swinging in the second set, hitting a .316 clip while limiting the Tritons to .128 for a 25-18 win.
The third set was the most competitive, ending 25-23.
The Gauchos travel to CSU Bakersfield Friday for a Big West match starting at 6 p.m.
