Shaelan Murison scored on a header, after a scramble in front of the goal in the 78th minute to tie the score and give UC Santa Barbara a 1-1 tie with Grand Canyon on Friday night at Harder Stadium.
Murison scored her third goal of the season for the Gauchos (1-1-3) as they fought back from a 1-0 deficit against the Antelopes (0-5-1).
Grand Canyon scored in the 7th minute and led 1-0 through the first 77 minutes. The Antelopes goal came from Sophia Roberts with an assist by Ellie Busik.
UCSB dominated the second half and, for the most part, the match. The Gauchos had 20 shots, including eight on goal, as well as 12 corner kicks, while Grand Canyon was limited to five shots overall and four on frame.
Murison’s goal came when Lauren Moss lobbed a pass from the midfield into the box. GCU goalkeeper Lauren Garthwaite came out to collect it while her two center backs came back to defend. A seeming miscommunication led to the ball falling in between the trio of players and Murison was there to head the ball into the goal.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the overtime, but the defenses were up to the task. Santa Barbara peppered Garthwaite with four shots.
The Gauchos will remain at home on Sunday when they host No. 2 Stanford in a 1:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium
