Two more goals on Wednesday night from forward Finn Ballard McBride moved him to No. 4 all-time in career goals at UCSB, but the UC Santa Barbara men’s soccer team would draw for the second consecutive match, 2-2 at UC Irvine.

The first place Gauchos are now 9-2-6 overall and 4-0-4 in Big West play, while the Anteaters moved into a tie for third place at 7-5-4 overall, 4-3-1 conference.

UCSB can clinch a second straight Big West regular season championship with a win or tie in its final regular season game at UC Riverside on Saturday.

The game’s opening goal came from Ballard McBride in the 14th minute. Defender Pablo Figueroa was taken down by UCI goalkeeper Luke Pruter in the box, awarding UCSB just its third penalty of the year, which McBride put away with a low shot towards the center of the goal.

Neither team scored again until early in the second half, when the Anteaters got their first of two equalizers on the night. On a set piece at the edge of the box, Ashish Chattha would hit a curling shot into the upper left corner of the goal to tie it at 1-1.

It didn’t take long for the Gauchos to regain their lead. Playing through the midfield in the 54th minute, Nemo Philipp would eventually feed the ball to Ballard McBride, who scored from 15 yards inside the far post to secure his third brace in four games.

However, the Anteaters weren’t done. Just ten minutes later, a shot by Robert Mejia would be saved by goalkeeper Leroy Zeller, but UCI retained possession on the rebound. Mario Anaya would end up with a shot from 15 yards out that he put inside the left post, scoring just the third goal the Gauchos have given up this Big West season.

Zeller would go on to finish with eight saves – five coming in the second half – setting a season-high.

While the Gauchos already have a spot in the Big West Tournament, they have yet to clinch a top-two seed and first round bye. However, falling out of the top two would be extremely unlikely, with UC Irvine needing to make up a +12 goal differential on the last day of conference play.

Ballard McBride now has 13 goals this season and 10 during conference play, becoming the first Gaucho to reach double-digits goals during Big West competition since at least 2003. His 31 career goals have moved him into a tie with Nick DePuy (2013-16) and Rob Friend (2001-02) for No. 4 all-time in Gaucho history.

The Gauchos will play their regular season finale at UC Riverside this Saturday at 7 p.m.
