UCSB senior co-captain Joseph Guillin defeated four USC Trojans on the way to winning the ITA Southwest Regional Championship last week at Pepperdine University.

The Southwest region includes UCLA, USC, Arizona, Arizona State, U of San Diego, Pepperdine, San Diego State, UCI, Hawaii, GCU, Cal Poly, and UCR and is considered by many to be the strongest region in the country.

Guillin’s singles title at this prestigious event is the first for UCSB and the first for a Big West Conference player.

Gaucho juniors Victor Krustev and Joey Rotheram advanced to the doubles semifinals.

Guillin was the No.2 seed for the championships and entered the tournament ranked 28th in the nation.

He defeated:
A. Stater (Cal Poly) 6-2,6-3
R. Jackson (USC) 5-7,6-1,6-2
S. Sharrma (USD) withdrawl
R. Smith (USC) 0-6,6-2,6-2
M. Bulis (USC) 6-1,6-4
S. Dostanic (USC) 2-6,6-3,7-5

Guillin earns an automatic bid to the ITA Fall Nationals in Newport Beach next month, the third of the four ‘major’ college championships.  Guillin reached the quarterfinals of the first major, the ITA Oracle Masters, and reached the semifinal of the consolation draw at the ITA All-America Championships, the second of the majors.
