A Westmont comeback fell short, and Saint Katherine snapped the Warriors’ three-game win streak with a 3-2 win at Murchison Gym Friday.

After falling behind 2-0, Westmont tied the match at 2-2 and pressured in the final set, but Saint Katherine hung on to win 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 19-25, 15-13.

Westmont junior middle hitter Lexi Malone led the Warriors with 14 kills — the last of which gave Westmont a 13-12 lead in the fifth set going into Saint Katherine’s final timeout.

Saint Katherine’s Makenzie Nutting responded after the timeout with a kill, a block and another kill to settle the match.

Saint Katherine improves to 12-4 and the Warriors are 12-8 overall after the non-conference match.

“We did a good job getting back in it,” Westmont coach Ruth McGolpin said, “but we could have very easily been swept all together. We knew they were going to the same attacker and at the end of the night we just weren’t putting our thinking caps on.

“I commend Sarah Murray, our assistant coach, who takes hours to make scouting reports for us. When it comes down to it though, it’s up to us to use them.”

The Warriors return to GSAC play Saturday night when they host The Master’s at 7 p.m. in Murchison Gym. Tickets are available on the Westmont Athletics website. Westmont is 6-2 in conference play.
