Southbound Highway 101 was shut down in Goleta early Monday following a fatal rollover crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident was reported shortly before 1 a.m. between Los Carneros Road and Fairview Avenue.
The vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, was southbound when it drifted to the left, striking the guardrail, said CHP Officer Jonathan Gutierrez.
The driver, a 27-year-old Santa Barbara man, then swerved to the right before overcorrecting to the left and striking the guardrail again, causing the vehicle to overturn.
“The driver was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, sustaining major injuries,” Gutierrez said.
The man was taken by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
His name was not released pending notification of relatives.
Southbound traffic was detoured off the freeway at Los Carneros, and back on at Fairview, the CHP said.
At 1:30 a.m., a CHP spokesman said the freeway should be reopened within 25 to 40 minutes.
“It is unknown at this time if the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision,” Gutierrez said, adding that the crash remained under investigation.
