A vehicle fire on Highway 166 in the Cuyama Valley spread to the nearby brush on Saturday afternoon, but firefighters quickly contained the incident to 10 acres.

At approximately 1:40 p.m., personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Cal Fire and Los Padres National Forest responded to the incident on Highway 166 near Cottonwood Canyon Road.

A fire in the engine of a gray sedan parked on the right shoulder spread to nearby vegetation south of the highway. 

Aircraft and bulldozer operators assisted in battling the fire.

At approximately 2:45 p.m., incident commanders released most of the resources including aircraft after stopping the fire’s forward progress.

California Highway Patrol officers and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office deputies also were dispatched to assist with traffic control in the area.

Highway 166 remained open, but traffic reportedly was affected by the firefighting activity and equipment.
