A 20-year-old Goleta man has been charged with felony arson of a structure or forest in connection with the May vegetation fire that broke out on the western edge of Goleta.

Court records show Alex Karim Henin was also charged with one aggravating factor, alleging that he has “engaged in violent conduct that indicates a serious danger to society.”

Emergency crews responded to the 900 block of Farren Road at around 8:25 p.m. on May 19 for a report of a growing, half-acre vegetation fire.

The fire ultimately burned 1 acre and prompted evacuation warnings for nearby homes.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Raquel Zick said in May that deputies detained a vehicle seen leaving the scene of the fire and found “a package containing three illegal fireworks, along with evidence indicating that additional fireworks had previously been removed from the packaging.”

Henin — then 19 years old — was arrested that night on suspicion of arson and possession of fireworks without a permit.

He was booked into Santa Barbara Main Jail and later released on bail.

Juveniles who were present at the scene were later released to their parents, per Zick.

Henin is set to be arraigned on the charges on Oct. 14, according to court records. He was not in jail custody as of Tuesday.

“The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that illegal fireworks pose a serious danger, particularly during dry conditions and in areas with vegetation that can ignite rapidly. Even a single firework can spark a fast-moving vegetation fire, placing lives, homes, and first responders at risk,” Zick said in May.
