One person was critically injured on Wednesday when a small plane crashed near the Santa Ynez Airport.
Santa Barbara County firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched at about 4:40 p.m. to the crash scene in a vineyard south of the airport, according to fire Capt. Scott Safechuck.
The 20-year-old male pilot suffered major injuries, Safechuck said.
Initial reports said a second person sustained minor injuries, but Safechuck later said that was not the case.
The pilot, who was the lone occupant, had to be extricated from the single-engine plane’s wreckage.
An American Medical Response ambulance transported the critically injured man to the airport, where a Calstar medical helicopter picked him up for a flight to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
The victim’s name and details on his condition were not available.
The Cessna 172 is registered to CP Aviation Inc. out of Santa Paula, according to Federal Aviation Administration records.
The crash reportedly occurred after the aircraft had just flown in from Santa Paula.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the crash.
