A surfer’s lifeless body was recovered from the ocean off Santa Barbara on Wednesday, according to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel responded at about 12:15 p.m. to the incident below Mesa Lane, fire Battalion Chief Cory Cloud said.

A witness told Noozhawk that a surfboard was discovered floating in the kelp bed offshore, prompting another surfer and a private boat to search for its owner.

They found the deceased surfer, and brought his body back to shore.

Cloud said firefighters were canceled from the incident after it was determined that the surfer was dead.

The Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol also responded to the incident, but a spokeswoman said Wednesday evening that no further information was available.
