One person was killed late Monday night in a fiery crash on Highway 154 near Lake Cachuma, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched shortly before 9:30 p.m. to the scene, where a vehicle veered about 50 feet over the side of the highway and caught fire, Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was declared dead at the scene.

The victim’s name was not available pending notification of relatives.

The vehicle left the roadway just west of the Cachuma Lake County Park entrance, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fire spread to the nearby vegetation but was quickly doused by firefighters, and it burned only a small area, Safechuck said.

Highway 154 was closed in both directions for a time following the crash, which was under investigation by the CHP.

Additional details were not immediately available.
