One person suffered injuries in a Santa Barbara apartment fire early Friday and was transported to a Los Angeles-area burn center, according to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department

The fire was reported around 12:20 a.m. on the 300 block of South Voluntario Street on the Lower Eastside.

The first arriving crews declared a working fire at a first-floor apartment unit and called more resources to the scene, fire Battalion Chief Jon Turner told Noozhawk.

Flames were coming out of the apartment and one of the front windows blew out, Noozhawk photographer Peter Hartmann reported from the scene.

The woman who lived in that unit was able to escape as firefighters arrived. She was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with burn injuries and was then transferred to a burn center, Turner said.

No other injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.

The fire extended to the second story of the building, and four of the six units had fire and smoke damage, Turner said.

The structure is considered uninhabitable until building officials can inspect it, and about 12 people were displaced, he said. Two of the units were vacant.

Santa Barbara City Fire’s response included four engines, one ladder truck, two battalion chiefs, a breathing support unit, and a fire investigator.

Crews were assisted by Santa Barbara police officers, who helped evacuate the building and conduct traffic control, the Montecito Fire Department, and American Medical Response ambulance crews.
