Through funding of a Homeland Security Grant, the Lompoc Fire Department has received more than $21,000 for new equipment.

The Fire Department has 13 new sets of body armor, as well as new rope equipment to replace old and warn equipment that is currently on first-response apparatus.

The ballistic gear includes; helmets, plate carrier, and soft trauma protection. Having the ballistic gear marks the first time the department has been able to add protection for its personnel in the event of an active shooter, or violent incident.

It is a sad day that we have to have this type of protection, but is imperative we ensure our personnel are safe, so they can perform their duties and protect the public.

The new rope rescue equipment will replace several old, and worn components of our rescue gear, and upgrade all first out response units with longer reach capabilities, more advanced technology, and quicker deployments.

The Lompoc Fire Department has been fortunate to continue to receive grants through Homeland Security and continues to look for other grant opportunities to upgrade equipment. In total, the grant value was $21,637.87.

Crews have already begun to train with the new equipment as it is placed in to service.
