Westmont Men’s Soccer (11-1-1, 5-0-1 GSAC), ranked fourth in the NAIA, extended its unbeaten streak to six with a 2-0 victory over the Hawks of San Diego Christian in today’s Golden State Athletic Conference contest. The game marked the eighth Warrior shutout this season.
The game was played at Grossmont Community College – a new venue for the Warriors.
“It was a turf field that was a bit narrow,” reported head coach Dave Wolf. “We had to figure out a way to move the ball quick enough to get out into some open spaces. I thought we were able to solve it enough to win the game.
“It was a tricky game for a number of different reasons. The conditions where challenging in the sense that it was warm day and it was windy. The wind was more of a factor than we anticipated at the beginning of the match.”
Tyler Young scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 63rd minute for a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors added a cushion in the 80th minute off the foot of Francisco “Panchito” Castro, his fourth goal of the season.
Going into the final week of the regular season, and with two games to play, Westmont is in first place in the Golden State Athletic Conference with 16 points. Vanguard (10-4, 5-1) is in second place with 15 points.
Westmont will play its final two games at home, where it is undefeated (7-0). Thursday, the Warriors will host Ottawa of Arizona at 3:15 p.m. Then on Saturday, Westmont will welcome Arizona Christian to Thorrington Field for a Senior Day game beginning at noon.
