One person suffered major injuries Saturday in a single-vehicle crash just east of Santa Maria, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The rollover crash occurred at about 9:15 a.m. near the intersection of Betteravia and Rosemary roads, fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli said.

The small SUV reportedly was traveling at high speed prior to the crash, Bertucelli said.

The vehicle rolled over and came to rest on its wheels at the edge of a farm field, with the driver and sole occupant trapped in the wreckage.

Extensive extrication was required to remove the critically injured victim from the vehicle, and he was flown by Calstar medical helicopter to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Bertucelli said.

The driver’s name and details on his condition were not available.

The crash was under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
