Bishop Diego took a step closer to an outright Tri-Valley League title with a 48-36 win at Santa Clara Wednesday.
The Cardinals are 4-1 in TVL play, ahead of second place St. Bonaventure at 4-2. Bishop Diego hosts winless Foothill Tech on Friday. Santa Clara is 3-3.
The game was close in the first half, until Bishop Diego pulled away with a 20-9 third quarter.
“We challenged our guys at halftime and told them the game was there if we really wanted it,” Cardinals coach James Coronado said. “We had to do it with defense, and credit the guys, they played about as good of defense as we could ask for. Then we starting trusting each other with our ball movement and it was a done deal after that.”
Senior Matthew Cunningham led the Cardinals with 15 points, and Tyler Williams chipped in 13.
“A lot of credit goes to senior Connor Streett and junior Marcus Chan; they dominated the boards and moved the ball well,” Coronado said.
