Daraka Larimore-Hall, political pundit, former chair of the Santa Barbara County Democratic Party and vice-chair of the California Democratic Party, talks about the Santa Barbara mayor’s race in this exclusive podcast with Josh Molina.
Larimore-Hall offers his perspective about the challenges that Mayor Cathy Murillo faces as a Mexican-American woman and the first Latina mayor, as well the candidacy of James Joyce III, who is looking to become the second African-American to serve on the City Council and the first mayor.
“I don’t think that the way racism functions in Santa Barbara politics is the kind of blatant, outright racism or spoken animosity toward Latinos that you might see in other parts of the state,” Larimore-Hall said. “It’s far more polite, far more subtle, but it’s very much there. Cathy has had double standards to live up to — as a woman, as a Latina.”

Larimore-Hall also talks about what happens when candidates of color are played against each other in politics, and how he believes that drags down the progressive agenda.
Larimore-Hall discusses his views on the strands of white privilege and systemic racism, and the subtle ways it manifests itself in politics and the media.
