The San Marcos girls recorded their fifth Channel League shutout Saturday, besting Lompoc 3-0.

The Royals are now 5-1-1 in league and play 5-0-2 Santa Barbara Tuesday at home.

San Marcos got on the board in the first half when Ava Arriaga hit a cross the hit the post and dropped in the six-yard box where sophomore Leilani Venegas hit a sharp volley for the goal.

Close to halftime, junior midfielder Caitlin Sparks received the ball in the Lompoc box, played a give-and-go around several Lompoc players with team captain Becca Rodriguez, and shot the ball near post for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Rodriguez scored in the second half for the 3-0 result.

“We were far from our best today, but we have great resiliency on this team,” Royals coach Brian Ziegenhagen said. “Lompoc played aggressive and physical against us, and at times we struggled with our link-ups going forward, but the girls had enough quality to move the ball quickly and create scoring opportunities.”
