The Carpinteria boys traveled to Malibu Thursday to take on the Sharks, and came away with a four-set loss, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21, for their first Citrus Coast League loss.
“We had no answer for their big outside hitter, who just hammered the ball whenever he was set, which was a lot,” said Warrior coach Mickey Caughey. “I wonder if he is related to the famed Hammerhead Shark? He’s just as deadly.
“We had a decent hammer ourselves with Joaquin Gonzalez pounding 14 spikes into their floor and bringing up 17 digs for a double-double. Our own Sebastian McCurry dug up an amazing 53 balls, preventing them from finding their way to the floor. Diesel Slade had nine kills and 16 digs, while Zach Isaac had four aces, four kills, one block and 15 digs. Gavin Lohuis had 35 assists which is not bad as he had to chase a few errant passes around the court and still put up some good hittable sets for our attackers, and he managed to dig nine balls as well.
The Warriors are now 3-1 in CCL play and 8-3 overall. They are at home Thursday for a match against Oxnard at 5 p.m.
Foothill Tech 3, Bishop Diego 1
Bishop Diego hosted Foothill Tech Thursday in Tri-Valley League play, losing again to the Dragons, 3-1, by scores of 25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21.
Braylon Katers led the Cardinals with 13 points, while Marcus Chan had 12 points. Anthony Eck had 11 points, and Liam Flood had eight points “while passing and defending exceptionally,” Bishop Diego coach Dillan Bennett said.
”Nobody likes to lose, and our team is getting kinda tired of losing,” Bennett said. “We have a competitive group, and while the loss stings, I’m really impressed with the improvement. If you take away the 32 hitting errors and the 12 serving errors, we played well.
The Cardinals are 7-16 overall and 4-3 in TVL play, and play in Buena Friday.
