San Marcos High School golf standout Shams Jahangir-Arshad shot a 2-under 70 Monday at the U.S. Junior Amateur tournament at Bandon Dunes in Oregon — good for a tie for 18th place after the first round.

After today’s final stroke-play round, the top 64 in the standings compete in a match play event to crown the 2022 U.S. Junior Amateur Champion.

Jahangir-Arshad “birdied two of his last three holes in windy and foggy conditions to complete a great first round today,” San Marcos golf coach Jeff Ashton reported.

“Shams just finished his sophomore year at San Marcos and we are super proud of him.”

Co-leaders for the first round are Harvey Young of Australia and Erich Fortlage of Paraguay, both with a 66 Monday.
