The Santa Barbara City College women’s volleyball team split matches at the Bakersfield Quad Saturday, and after a Friday night home win against Grossmont now stand at 2-1 on the season.
In the first game at Bakersfield, the Vaqueros swept Long Beach on scores of 25-23, 25-17, 25-13. Sophomore opposite Caroline McCarty led SBCC with 13 kills. Sophomore setter Emma Crabbe dished out 27 assists.
In the second game, Mt. San Antonio College swept SBCC, 25-20, 25-18, 25-14 for the Vaqueros’ first loss of the season.
On Friday night in the Sports Pavilion, the Vaqueros opened the season with a four-set win over Grossmont, 29-27, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22. That served as payback: Grossmont ended SBCC’s season last year in the SoCal Regional second round, also in four sets.
“What a great way to start our season, with a revenge match win over the team that ended our season last year,” SBCC head coach Kat Niksto said. “I was extremely proud of a couple big performances by freshmen Heidi Collins and Ava Guenther.”
