Providence senior No. 1 player Avala Elwood swept her three singles sets, leading the Patriots to a tightly-contested 10-8 decision over Carpinteria Tuesday.
“The Patriots put together a total team effort to secure the win,” Providence coach Evan Covell said.
Other Providence highlights included seniors Jane Krautmann and Mia Vandever winning two of their three sets at No. 1 doubles.
Highlights for Carpinteria included a 3-0 sweep by the doubles team of Charlotte Cooney and Ariana Lounsbury with the loss of only four games.
“It was the opening dual match for both teams and I was happy with how we performed overall,” Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said. “We showed a lot of fight throughout and even after the match was decided. I am hoping that type of character will be a precursor of what is to come.”
Garces 12, Santa Barbara 6
The Dons hosted CIF-Central Section power Garces, and managed impressive results in doubles, including a sweep of doubles sets in the last round.
Santa Barbara senior Ashley Birch and sophomore Mary Moses prevailed against the Rams No. 1 doubles team of Crider and Eddy, winning 6-3.
“Ashley showed great leadership and aggressiveness as she continued to come forward on short balls, attack well and finished off many volleys,” Santa Barbara coach Danny Echt said. “The Garces team had great defensive skills, and Ashley and Mary stayed patient and finished off points together at the net. It was classic doubles play. Birch finished 2-1 on the day and also partnered with Charlie Hedrick.”
Dons senior Charlotte Ryan teamed with sophomore Caitlyn Buist, and they won a marathon set against the top Rams team, lasting 90 minutes. After being down in the set 2-4, “Charlotte figured out that by changing the pace and not needing to blast from the back court, her change of pace set up her partner Caitlyn who was willing and able to cut off high balls.” Ryan and Buist finished the day 3-0.
The Dons are 1-2 in pre season and play against Foothill Tech on Thursday.
Laguna Blanca 14, Nordhoff 4
Laguna Blanca singles players Jinling Wang and Caroline Kenny each won two sets, contributing to a 14-4 Owls win over Nordhoff Tuesday.
Laguna’s No. 1 singles player Danica Damiani. won her first set over Nordhoff’s No. 1, coming back from a 1-4 deficit to prevail 7-5. Natalie Schweitzer, in her first match of the season representing Laguna Blanca, beat played Nordhoff’s No 3 singles player, 6-2.
The No. 1 doubles team of Katherine Ball and Grace Trautwein and No. 2 team Nikki Mielcarek and Molly Morouse both swept three sets, contributing 6 points to the win. At No. 3, Alexandra Siegel and Lucia Camp won two sets, in Camp’s first time representing Laguna Blanca.
Laguna Blanca returns to action Sept. 13, hosting Bishop Diego.
San Luis Obispo 8, Santa Ynez 1
The doubles team of Brooklyn Ricci and Paige Halme provided the only set win for the Pirates, prevailing 8-4 over Nicole Saavedra and Sophia Peindo of San Luis Obispo.
“Emma Sell played a great match against the Number 1, coming back from 2-5,” Santa Ynez coach Jennifer Rasmussen said, and the Pirates doubles team of Morea Naretto and Allie Linane were close in doubles.
