Providence girls tennis suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the CIF-SS Division 4 quarterfinals, losing to host Pacifica Christian of Orange County on total games, 73-70, after the teams tied 9-9 in sets.

“I’m so proud of these girls and how hard they battled today,” said coach Chris Elwood. “Despite being short a singles starter due to the flu, we tied 9-9 to a very strong Pacifica Christian team. Losing 70-73 on games is a brutal way to break a tie, but it shows just how close we were. Our seniors really led the way today.”

Avala Elwood won two of three singles sets, defeating Pacifica Christian’s No. 1 player 6-3 and their No. 3 player 7-6 (7-5).

“She battled back from down 2-5 to win five straight points in the tiebreaker. That win tied the match at 9-9,” said Elwood.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Jane Krautmann and Mia Vandever swept their competition, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. The No. 2 duo of  Jacky and Janelle Pryko swept, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2, and No. 3 Amber Regan and Annie Haugen beat Pacifica’s No. 3 team, 7-6 (7-4) in a hard-fought tiebreaker.
