The Dos Pueblos girls finished the Oxnard Tournament Saturday with a loss to Taft High School of Woodland Hills, 58-38.
Justine Katz led the Chargers with 14 points, including 4-of-6 from behind the 3-point line. Carly Letendre added 13 points, with 3-of-8 from behind the arc for 37 percent.
“These two are shooting a high percentage and have good chemistry and shot selection,” Charger coach Manny Murillo said. The two guards “did a good job of trying to set up their teammates and playing unselfish while still being scoring threats.”
Sierra Jewell led the team in rebounding with 13 rebounds.
“Sierra Jewell continues to excel in her role as one of the captains and our leading rebounder in the tournament,” Murillo said. “Her attitude, energy and effort is something that is a reflection of her as a person.”
Communication on defense is an area that needs improvement, the coach said.
“We have a lot of smart kids who have high basketball IQs,” Murillo said. “They just need to share their knowledge more on the court and it will improve.
“I thank God for the opportunity to play in this tournament, and I know it will help us prepare for league. I take the credit for the losses. I have a great group that I love to coach.”
The Chargers, now 2-2 overall and 1-0 in Channel League play, host Santa Barbara Monday for their home league opener.
“Even though we went 0-2 in the tournament, I feel like we got better and improved,” Murillo said. “We have a hard-working group and I know they will respond in our league home opener vs Santa Barbara on Monday! I’m excited to coach against such an experienced coach in Andrew Butcher. Our team is hungry and ready to compete on Monday.”
