Dos Pueblos erupted for 30 points in the third quarter and defeated Pasadena Poly, 61-47, in an opening-day game at the Jim Bashore Holiday Classic at Carpinteria High on Monday.
Micah Goss scored 17 points and was a force at the defensive end, said coach Joe Zamora. Justin Stock had 14 points and Joe Talarico added 12 points.
“Today’s game was a good challenge for us,” said Zamora. “We struggled in the first half to score, but we were able to respond in the second half with a big third quarter.”
He added that the Chargers’ defense stepped up in the second half. They limited Poly to 21 points.
Dos Pueblos (2-6) plays Bishop Diego on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Bishop Diego 61, Channel Islands 33
The Cardinals’ defense was strong at the start of the game and the third quarter in beating Channel Islands in a tournament opener.
Bishop led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter and it outscored the Raiders 13-2 to start the third quarter.
“Our defense was great the whole game but definitely to start each half, and that set the tone,” said coach James Coronado.
Isaac Veal led a balanced Cardinal attack with 15 points, Lui Fernandez had 10 and Bryan Trejo and Qu’Ran Gossett each had 9.
“We also had a couple others with 4 or 5 points as well. So, all in all, a great team win with everyone getting some time and starters getting to rest, which is great because we have three more games this week.”
Santa Ynez 59 Thacher 54
Landon Lassahn poured in 26 points and Caleb Cassidy had a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds as the Pirates rolled in their tournament opener.
Lassahn grabbed eight rebounds and Jackson Ollenberger scored 11 points and had eight boards.
Santa Ynez plays Foothill Tech at noon on Tuesday.
Foothill Tech 56, Carpinteria 48
Kainoa Glasgow scored 24 points and sophomore Sebastian Campuzano added 11 for Carpinteria (1-9) in the loss to Foothill Tech.
In other action, de Toledo defeated Grace Brethren, 81-50.
Carpinteria plays Grace Brethren on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
