Micah Goss sparked an 11-5 run in the third period to help Dos Pueblos open up a 13-point lead and later hit a clutch three-pointer in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter to help the Chargers hang on to beat Bishop Diego, 53-50 in a second-round game at Carpinteria’s Jim Bashore Holiday Classic on Tuesday night.

In other games, Carpinteria outscored Grace Brethren 21-3 in the third quarter en route to a 63-36 victory; Santa Ynez rolled past Foothill Tech, 79-46; de Toledo edged Thacher,  57-53, and Pasadena Poly beat Channel Islands, 71-39.

Goss buried a three-pointer and followed with another basket to give Dos Pueblos a 37-28 advantage in the third period. Daniel Mauldin hit a pair of baskets and Grant Hughes scored on an offensive rebound to make it a 43-30 game.

Bishop Diego fought back in the fourth period behind three-pointers from Lui Fernandez and Rylan Bohnett to pull within three, 48-45.

Goss gave Dos Pueblos some breathing room by hitting a three-pointer with 1:59 left.

“Micah gives you the three,” said DP coach Joe Zamora. “He doesn’t shoot it as much because the other guards shoot them more than he does and he’s attacking the basket more. But, yeah, we feel confident with him to do that.”

Bishop Diego came right back with a corner three-pointer from Fernandez and steal and layup by Isaac Veal to make it a one-point game, 51-50, with 1:05 left.

Grant Hughes answered for Dos Pueblos with a drive to make it 53-50.

Bishop Diego set up Fernandez for a game-tying trey from his favorite spot in the corner, but the ball the rimmed out with 17 seconds to go.

Goss was fouled and missed the front end of a one-and-one free-throw situation, but the taller Chargers got the rebound and Goss was fouled again with 12 seconds left. He missed in the bonus situation, giving Bishop Diego a chance at a game-tying three pointer.

DP played good defense and the best shot Bishop could get was a 35-footer at the buzzer by Bryan Trejo.

“We had a chance at the buzzer, and that’s all we can ask for,” said Bishop coach James Coronado. “We will learn and be better from this, I know it.”

Coronado credited DP with making his team play out of sync in the first half.

“Hats off to DP, I don’t think we were sharp the whole first half and I feel it was a credit to those guys,” he said.

Fernandez scored 24 points to lead Bishop Diego (7-4), Isaac Veal had 11 points and Rylan Bohnett knocked down three three-pointers and scored 10 points off the bench.

“I do want to credit Rylan Bohnett who has been struggling to crack our rotation,” said Coronado. “But for the third game in a row he has showed patience and readiness to contribute even though he hasn’t had much time in the previous games.”

Goss and Hughes each scored 14 points and Mauldin contributed eight points and some big rebounds for Dos Pueblos, which has now won two straight and is 3-6 on the season.

Zamora was especially pleased how his team kept its composure as Bishop Diego made a run in the fourth quarter.

“Our guys settled down,” he said. “We ran our stuff that we were supposed to, and granted there were some missed shots and (Bishop) made shots coming back, but we talked about what we wanted to do. We’re going to execute and dictate the shots that we were going to take, because in the past we’ve had teams that dictated the shots we were gonna take, which isn’t a good thing.

“These guys, they grew a lot,” he added. “I told them that because with all the atmosphere and all the screaming and yelling, and having to fight through that focus with all that other stuff going on, I was really proud of the way they handled it.”
