In the team’s first game in more than a week, Carpinteria scored early and often Saturday, taking a 7-0 lead after four innings on the way to an 8-3 win at Villanova Prep.
Shane Goodmanson started for the Warriors and went two innings in “a tune-up type outing,” where he gave up just two hits while striking out four, Carpinteria coach Patrick Cooney said.
Beto Martinez turned in a scoreless fifth inning, thanks in part to an unusual pitcher unassisted double play. He made a good catch on a low pop up in foul territory before chasing down a Wildcat runner attempting to score from third base.
Erich Goebel also turned in a scoreless frame as he struck out the side in the sixth.
Offensively, Goebel had two doubles, two RBI, and scored twice. Catcher Diego Nieves had two hits, two RBI and scored two runs, while first baseman Matt Muñoz was 2-for-3 with a triple and a sacrifice bunt.
Left fielder Isaac Flores had a first inning double that knocked in a pair of runs.
“It was great to finally get a chance to play,” Cooney said. “The starters got their ‘sea legs’ under them, and every player on the roster made it into the game.
“It was nice to come away with a win, but the chance to develop our team defense, tune our pitching and work on small-ball execution was the real value in playing.”
The Warriors, now 4-2, next play a rain makeup with Channel Islands at home on Monday.
