Another football coach who stepped away from the game is returning to the field to coach girls flag football in the fall.

Douglas Caines
Doug Caines is named the girls flag football coach at Dos Pueblos.

Doug Caines, the former head football coach at Dos Pueblos, was named to guide the school’s 7-on-7 flag football program in the inaugural season of the CIF-sanctioned sport.

He becomes the second former varsity football coach to run a girls flag football program at a Santa Barbara Unified School District school.

Last month, San Marcos named Jason Fowle to be its flag football coach. Fowle formerly served as the Royals’ head football coach and later returned as a varsity assistant.

“As a football coach and a father of two girls, this is a uniquely exciting opportunity for me,” said Caines. “I am excited to get started and lead student athletes on the field again.

“I want to thank (Athletic Director) Dan Feldhaus for the opportunity, and my wife, Nicole, for supporting me on this new journey.”

Caines was DP’s head football coach from 2018-2021 and served as an assistant from 2015-2017. He was the defensive coordinator of back-to-back Channel League championship teams in 2016-17.

Prior to his arrival at DP, Caines coached the varsity football team at Santa Barbara High.

“We are very excited to have Doug Caines coaching again,” said Feldhaus. “I feel we have the right person at the helm in this inaugural season of girls flag football here at Dos Pueblos. Coach Caines has tremendous knowledge of football and I have great confidence that his expertise and passion will transfer seamlessly to coach our flag football team.

“I know he will strive to create a positive environment and culture that allows our student-athletes to flourish, learn and develop as individuals and as a team.”

Caines has been on the faculty at DP since 2015. He is a media arts teacher and has played a huge role in the enhancement of the student-operated video production of Charger events.
