Field events made the difference in Carpinteria’s dual meet split against Fillmore on Wednesday.
The Carpinteria girls won five of six field events and outscored the Flashes 49-5 in posting a 92-44 win to complete an unbeaten dual meet season in the Citrus Coast League.
The boys won only one field event and lost 87-48 against undefeated Fillmore. The Warriors went 3-3.
Ivan Vargas set a PR of 10-6 to win the pole vault for Carpinteria’s lone field-event victory. He also had a PR of 18-11.5 to finish second in the long jump.
Also for the boys, Chris Ceja won three events. He set a PR of 53.69 in the 400, won the 200 at 24.63 and anchored the winning 4×400 relay team.
Wes Chung won both hurdle races, taking the 110 highs in 17.91 and the 300m hurdles in 48.97.
Ainslee Alexander was a triple winner for the Carpinteria girls, taking the events, the long jump (15-5), triple jump (34-0) and pole vault (9-0). Melanie Avalos won the discus with a toss of 91-10 and Hayley Raunsbak won the high jump at 4-1.
Winners on the track included Emily Ehlers in the 100 (13.69), Lela Roberts in the 100m hurdles (18.03) and Mike Mullein in the 300m hurdles (56.64).
“The meet after Russell Cup is always a tough one for Carpinteria,” said coach Van Latham. “There is quite bit of energy and emotion expended for that meet. We avoided a major let down. We accomplished what we needed to, finishing out our dual meet season on a positive note.
“The girls obtained their goal of being undefeated in league. The boys gave a great effort against the first-place Flashes.
The Warriors will next compete at the County Championships in Santa Ynez on Saturday.
