With an 8-1 dominance in singles, San Marcos beat Mira Costa 12-6 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 boys tennis playoffs at home.
The Royals’ No. 1 singles player Matthew Chung swept his sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, as did Carter Cotich at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 7-5, 6-3. Jed Greenwald won the two sets he played, 6-4, 6-4.
“The singles players showed up today ready to work hard, which was a key component in our win today,” San Marcos coach Emily Carver said.
In doubles, Joey and Charlie Friedman continued their winning streak for the Channel League champs, sweeping 6-0, 6-4, 6-2.
And Nathan Shaffer and Spencer Bauer made a huge comeback in their match against Mira Costa’s 1 doubles to secure a 7-5 victory.
“Nathan and Spencer did not give up and kept fighting for each point,” Carver said. “Some great volley put-aways were imperative to that win.”
The Royals next play Beckman, ranked No. 1 in Division 1, on Friday in second-round play.
