The San Marcos doubles team of brothers Joey and Charles Friedman made it to the round of 16 in the CIF-Southern Section Individuals finals Tuesday in Claremont.
The loss in that round to a pair from Woodbridge was the Friedmans’ only loss of their senior season in CIF play.
First, they won their round of 32 match against a team from Fountain Valley, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the round of 16.
“Both brothers were playing their best tennis of the season throughout the individual tournament that started last Thursday,” San Marcos tennis coach Emily Carver said.
“Their first serves proved to be especially challenging to opponents, and they were able to capitalize on that often. Agility and reaction time at the net are some of their strengths and this tournament really showed that off.
“As their coach, I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
As there are 565 schools competing in the Southern Section, Joey and Charles’ finish was quite an accomplishment, Carver noted.
“San Marcos tennis will greatly miss these two leaders,” Carver said. “They often rallied the team to practice after long weeks of matches and motivated each other to continue to work on their game.”
